  • I have seen many ecosystems all over the United States, but one touches me like no other...the Western oak savanna. When I manifest my 10+ acres of this habitat (hello vision board), gardening will become irrelevant to me. I will spend the rest of my life as a steward and caretaker of this largely lost ecosystem (estimates have around only 2-3% of willamette valley oak savanna remaining). These pics taken yesterday on a well restored and managed section of savanna an hour southwest of Portland. #quercusgarryana #oaksavanna #restorethewillamettevalley

Image alt text: A narrow, reddish-brown stem with branches pointing upward, each branch containing many yellow flowers that look like tiny tubes. The grass is in focus on the left half of the image, while an oak tree and prairie grasses are blurred in the sunny background on the right half.

  • ** Photo Series** About 2 months ago I shared some photos on insta of my favorite park, Malibu Creek State Park, pre Malibu fire. During my winter break I had the opportunity to return to the park after the fire blazed through the area. It was a difficult scene to take into for sure. The golden grass and brushy understory, typical of oak savanna, was entirely gone. Hills, mountains, and forest floor were charred and ash-covered. However, there were many positives to take away as well. The large valley oaks that dominate the landscape remained largely intact. I was concerned that the burnt understory would disperse the large winter sparrow flocks and California Quail covies. But to my surprise the flocks were feeding, and the quails were roaming. In fact, the park was alive with birds. The park service was also hard at work protecting native plant species from further damage, wrapping saplings in protective mesh. It was a troubling yet inspiring scene, watching this fire resistant ecosystem walk the natural road to recovery. Get well soon Malibu Creek! More critter photos to come. #malibu #malibufire #malibucreekstatepark #southerncalifornia #oaksavanna #californiaparks #statepark #fireecology #naturephotography #naturephotographer #naturephotos #photojournalism #conservation #conservationstories #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #wildlifephoto #naturelovers
