Not my usual, but I found this woman sketched out on canvas board, while searching for an old textbook in our basement. I drew her simple, light lines at least five years ago, sitting on our enclosed sunroom in Old Town, Virginia. I remember the moment clearly, and I know I wanted a dark background and a green dress, but otherwise couldn’t recall the specific vision I had for her.
But I thought she deserved some paint, after all these years. I went with green tones inspired by my best friend’s dress in college. (I still plan to steal it right out of her closet! Still want me to visit in February, my dear? 😉)

Guess the artist:⠀
This artist's paintings of the 1920s are among the most important precursors of the informal art of the 1940s and 50s. He is regarded as the inventor of the Impasto and made a central contribution to the revitalization of modern art after Cubism.⠀
In 1922 he took part in the "Salon d'Autonome" for the first time. At first he barely made ends meet financially and hardly sold any of his works. But finally, art dealers, including Fabre Jeanne Castel and Paul Guillaume, showed great interest. His figurative paintings consists of still lifes, landscapes, and nudes, ranging from the relentless realism of the early years to paintings in shades of grey and darkly illuminated, almost abstract forms of the "période noire".⠀

New painting nearly and finally finished. I always forget how difficult revisiting a previous subject matter is. Had a lot of moments where I struggled to find the right direction. But yesterday I had one of those amazing moments where it eventually clicked.
