• Craving colour •
I photographed some snowdrops today, I did. I adore them and I will post my picture of the Fair Maids of February in a day or two but I confess the slate grey skies made me crave brights for this evening’s post.
This is a snapshot of flowers picked from my cutting patch and topped up from the honesty farm shop last July. It was the first time I had given over an area of the garden to growing flowers for bringing indoors. As I was recovering throughout the warmer months the bouquets I was able to make were incredibly uplifting. Watering, dead-heading and weeding these few square metres of floral jumble brought me into contact with the beneficial bacterium Mycobacteium vaccae. This non-pathogenic soil bacterium triggers the release of serotonin in the human brain. Gardening is itself a form of antidepressant and cultivating these cutting flowers was such an important part of my recovery.
If your eyes were longing for jewel-like colour too I hope this answered their need... EDITED TO ADD: please to follow my pal Benjamin @higgledygarden because most of these cut flower seeds came from his small but beautifully formed shop. Plus he lives on a narrow boat (in summer it is festooned with flowers) with his pal Flash the Visla and all seed orders are accompanied by a letter hand-written by Ben in an antique fountain pen. Heaven 🌿
New painting I just finished for my solo show @stephaniechefasprojects opening March 1st in Portland, OR. I'm still exploring dark blue backgrounds.
Lately I’ve been receiving inquiries for 1:1 floral design workshops. These opportunities are exciting to me as teaching has become an unexpected yet enjoyable part of my floral journey. More information on 1:1 workshops to come very soon! This image 👆🏻 is from today’s flower play date with @kyliemones. Much needed creative inspiration during a Northeastern January.

Everything is a choice, so make choices that take you closer to where you want to be. I’ve been struggling with creativity lately, maybe it has to doo with all the opportunities that lays before us on a new year? So how do you do to get back to a creative life? I’m no expert but this is what works for me. Set aside time to reflect and recharge, go for a walk or just sit down on your own peacefully and quiet.
Take away your phone, sometimes it’s great to find inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest but it can also make you stressed, and it’s easy that you only copy someone else’s work but try to genuinely find and produce work that you love. Meet people that inspire you, ask them how they find their inspiration and be curious. Look at pretty things, find unique items at flea markets and buy flowers, that always works for me. Listening to music and reading is another thing, and watching movies. What do you do, to stay creative? Please share your best way to be creative. And have a beautiful weekend everyone! #alliseeispretty#whpwonderlust

Here’s one stem of every new flower I made for my Valentine's Day Collection! I've playfully coined this collection "A Floral Love Affair," but it's accurate. It represents another year's worth of growing, studying, honing my skills, and becoming further enthralled in this art form. Plus it's chockfull of peonies and roses, and who doesn't love those! I'm smitten, and I hope you are too.

lest you think this current interest in plants and color is somehow new or out of character, let me direct you to my MFA thesis from 2006. An entire living room of floral patterns welded in wire and then powder coated. and if you’ve ever wondered what inspires my jewelry, if you look closely, you’ll see the same shapes I use in my chains today. my production jewelry line literally evolved from the motifs in this body of work! .
❤️🙌 We made our way to Portland’s Old Port in his truck. He seemed relaxed, but I was extremely nervous. We walked in to the coffee house and ordered drinks. Finally we were squared up across from each other, eyes locked. “I can’t even believe this worked out,” I said, referring to the snow day re-scheduling of my conference to coincide with his meeting. “I’m really, really happy you decided to meet up,” he said.
We sat, his smile warming my nerves so that eventually we were both grinning stupidly at each other. Then he asked, “Drive along the promenade?” We drove along the eastern prom and found a place to sit looking out over the Atlantic. We began to talk in earnest. I told him about my surgery for fibroids, endometriosis, cystitis and infertility. He told me he had multiple sclerosis and had been in the hospital for some heart issues. He’d been really, really sick and it had been awful.
I reached across the seat and grabbed his hand. The sea was silver in the winter light, and the sky was pinking with the early winter sunset. He pulled me closer and put his arm around me, hugging me close.
It was all I’d ever hoped it to be, that side embrace. I rested my head on his shoulder as we continued to talk. “I missed you so much after we stopped hanging out,” he said. “You seriously have no idea. At least you got married. I went through online dating hell!” We laughed. I turned to him and he kissed me, with the mighty ocean in front of us and behind us, a blazing city on a hill.

Home home home 🏠
Since college I’ve been living in a long series of apartments built before my parents were born. I love the challenge of managing the odd layouts and quirky built-ins to make each place feel like home. But every once in a while you get a gem like this medicine cabinet that I’ll truly miss when we move on from this home and into a new one. Is it weird to have the bathroom be one of your favorite rooms in the house? 🤷🏾♀️😅
So excited to show you the print of the month for January! This painting called “Aglow” was my favorite painting of 2018. When the meteorologist calls the weekend’s forecast “complicated and very interesting”... the only logical solution is to eat 🍰!
Or maybe I’m just in awe of @victoriaclausenflorals work at @bcc1898 because I wish we could create a backdrop like that for our special little lady who turns 7 today!
Snow or slush, there will be cake, ice cream and lots of ❤️ so I hope you get to enjoy a slice of fun this weekend too...
Tomorrow we’ll be driving up to @wyndridgeweddings open house (🤞🏼to the weather gods) and next Saturday is FREE engagement sessions at @havenstreetballroom! TWO client meetings this week and an Esesh next Sunday... what is this slow season I’ve heard about?
Tell me your favorite way to eat cake... a la mode? With 🍷? 🙋🏼♀️ Surrounded by family?

It’s good to be home with signs of spring on the way! Yesterday when I checked the tulips, the earliest varieties were pushing through the soil. So quick! I guess the warm weather we had at New Year’s sped them up a bit. Pictured is Miami Sunset, a new variety we’re trying this year. I pulled the first photo from the @dutchgrown_com site, where I sourced these bulbs. And the second photo is of our sprouts! I’m excited for spring!
