Joining us for a part of our walk to Talava Arches ... dogs have a lot of freedom on Niue 🇳🇺

You can literally take a well trained dog ANYWHERE. A dog that listens to their people actually HAS freedom. Training your dog should not be looked upon as taking something away from your dog. Lots of dog owners feel like they are breaking their dog’s spirit. In fact it’s just the opposite. You are opening possibilities of what you can do together, fulfilling more of your dog’s needs & allowing them to be a present aspect in your lives... which is why everyone wants a dog in the first place. No one ever says, “I want a dog so I can lock it up when company comes, it pulls my arm out of my socket on walks or steals my food off the counter!”
————————————————————————Rules & boundaries are what keep us all as a society civilized. We need to teach our dogs the same things, other wise they are just going to act like animals. Which ironically is the same way we refer to unruly humans when they act out of line. Manners are a way of life & having them gets you a lot further in it. I always say, no one truly wants a “dog”, you want a well mannered member of your family. Remember you need to teach them to be that way... otherwise you will be stuck with an animal. #dogfreedom
Maui’s time with us in the Stay & Learn program spanned over the holidays. We really have had great opportunities to proof his household manners around many guests.
If you remember, Maui came in a little over a week ago as an out of control 7 month old puppy; jumping up on people, stealing items, counter surfing, being mouthy. In fact, his family didn’t trust him around many people because of his size, strength & puppy biting. In this short time, we have been able to gain a ton of leverage over this behavior by instilling structure, rules & boundaries that Maui both respects & understands.
Using behaviors such as the place command, we are able to have Maui be part of the party! He is learning how to be better behaved around items that previously would cause him to create chaos. These new rules that Maui is being taught will allow him & his family the freedom of spending time together. Instead of having to lock up Maui while guests visit, he can be out with everyone. This will lead to even better manners as he matures into an adult! #placecommand
I’m on a journey, part of an exciting life unfolding. Everyday, my dad leaves and comes home smelling of office. He comes home smelling of photocopier dust and static electricity that he absorbs from his computer. If only he was able to run around naked like me, with only the fur on his back and not having to work in what imagine to be a giant dog crate—with no blankets or toys. But I know he’s on a journey and I know that one day he’ll remember what it’s like to poo in the woods and pee on a tree. And he won’t have to growl about what we’re doing on Christmas vacation to the hooman standing next to him at the urinal in the men’s washroom. #freedogs#dogfreedom#dogsofinstagram#myleasidedogwalker
This big nerd will insert himself anywhere he pleases and he doesn't see anything wrong with it. He doesn't think he's people but he doesn't think he should be treated any different just because he's a four legged.
He's part of the pack and if the pack is sitting at the table for dinner he doesn't see why he's not getting a chair. If the pack is leaving the house, he's rushing the door to try to come with. If we're in the car he wants to be right up front too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If he wants your attention he will do whatever it takes to get your attention. Ignore him and he might steal something from you and run off so that you'll chase him or he might just jump in your lap. It's really hard to ignore a 70 lb dog that jumps in your lap! Funny enough when we go for walks he does a pretty good job of ignoring me. Oh Boo! My crazy fella.
Tell me friends, what does your dog do to get your attention?
