On online dating, using Tinder, my personal experience and how I changed my mind about it
May 2014, Serbia. My friend: “You don’t know Tinder? You don’t know #Tinder? Really?”
Me coming back to Moscow, in office: “Guys, there is Tinder, it has great design and very simple algorithm. It is our competitor!” We worked on a big international IT project, one of the services we were offering to customers was online dating.
At the age when meeting any new people was a big entertainment and like reading the live physiology books and work took it as a professional research we swiped and swiped on a new online toy. By that time not many people knew about it in Moscow. So there would be only well-traveled, well-informed, catching the current agenda guys-both Russians and foreigners. So it was already like a natural selection. And just much less girls in the quantity. Me and my friend had a lot of “being bosses” fun. Once we got confused and as a result we got 2 dates arranged at the same time, in places in front of each other. 2 guys in one cafe, other 2 in the next one 😅 At some cold snowy evenings we could just get bored and lazy with my roommate. “You wanna eat out somewhere?”- she or I would ask. And we would open Tinder and choose someone for a company not making a big deal out of this. Dating in Russia is like that a guy is fully serving a girl in the beginning: pic up, flowers, where you want to go, paying for every step, even for your friend, drop off, no kisses, nothing, just talking. In a word, “fulfilling a girl’s wishes” at his best, whatever she wants to do - “fully at your service” till the moment she get convinced to choose him, after the scenario is going in a bit the opposite direction 😅 This tradition of caring for a woman in Russia, women take as obligated gentelmenhood. And girls in Russia swipe and swipe on online market of gentlemen with an idea “who is gonna be my gentleman tonight?” So we did the same. Not proud to say, but it is the truth. Though happy to say we always cared about who was gonna take care of us.
