A few months back we featured the first in what is turning out to be a series of intelligent short films, starring another great character actor Michael K Williams, asking himself (and other versions of himself) why he so often gets typecast as villains. Now The Atlantic has partnered with like-minded media channel HBO, who helped introduce Jeffrey Wright, here, like Williams, riffing on multiple versions of his own personality and his everyday concerns. It's a great piece of work: witty, entertaining, funny and sad at the same time, and very very human. The Atlantic and HBO promise films in the future along similar lines. We look forward to them. Though he has been associated with Nespresso in Europe since 2006, Clooney famously refused to appear in American ads for the brand until owner Nestle agreed to support a coffee production programme in South Sudan. That finally came to fruition in 2015, prompting Clooney's first US campaigns with pal Danny DeVito. This latest spot isn't quite as strong as the DeVito ad or its fine effects-driven follow-up with Andy Garcia. It's still pretty good, and (slightly) less cringe-making than the ads he made here in Europe.   • After last year's disappointingly weak Christmas ad, John Lewis comes thundering back to full form - and so does agency Adam&Eve DDB after a few less impressive offerings - with a spectacular musical version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The reason is the launch of the John Lewis Partnership's revamped brand identity, in which department store John Lewis and supermarket Waitrose have adopted a shared "& Partners" tag to reflect the fact the business is actually owned by its staff - known internally as "partners". Yes, well that's the reason but the ad far transcends such matters, as an ordinary school concert is transformed with some wholly brilliant staging. It's the best Christmas ad John Lewis never made; and no doubt will inspire numerous head teachers to try something similarly ambitious for this year's end of year concert...   • "Close Talker". With less than two weeks to go till Super Bowl, agencies and advertisers have been leaving it later than usual to start releasing teasers or full ads from the Big Game. Last year, the first ads started appearing at least a week earlier. This year, though, Colgate's spot is only now the first full commercial to drop, although Kia unveiled a teaser for their own ad over the weekend. Presumably, the floodgates will now open. Given the general (low) standard of Colgate ads, this one is pretty good, featuring actor Luke Wilson (always my favourite Wilson brother). As usual with all Colgate-Palmolive advertising, WPP's dedicated Red Fuse unit is responsible.   • "We Are What We Do". Not sure about that new slogan, surely one of the most meaningless sentences of all time. But the new ad for NatWest from M&C Saatchi is rather good. British banking ads always tread a fine line between trying to be profound (like Lloyds) or too corny (like Santander). But this campaign strikes a nice balance with some good gags but not so many that it comes across as too flippant. NatWest has long positioned itself as the "friendly" bank and M&C's work does an excellent job of conveying that message. Anyone who's ever moved house will be more than familiar with these vignettes.   • "The Nightclub". Mother's latest for Ikea in the UK is not perhaps the agency's best work for the brand, but still better than much of the competition. To promote the retailer's beds and mattresses, Mother takes the idea of a nightclub at face value as a place not to stay awake but to go to sleep in the company of like-minded individuals. There are some cute gags along the way: the cereal bar, toast kebabs and milky tea cocktails, but this feels more like the enhanced record of what was presumably an experiential event than a fully scripted commercial. We still have fond memories of Mother's beds-in-the-sky ad for Ikea four years ago with Prospero's closing monologue from The Tempest as the voiceover. Well that's pushing it a bit perhaps, but it makes for an entertaining ride. You, like us, might have noticed an odd habit of Aussies and Kiwis of always referring to flat-bed pick-ups like this as "Utes". It's a term that only exists in Australia and New Zealand. It was Unilever that first introduced social responsibility into packaged goods advertising with Dove's Self-Esteem Project, but Procter & Gamble grabbed that ball a few years back and have been running with it ever since. That underlying message has gradually been rolling out to different brands, finally reaching Gillette on this the 30th anniversary of that long-established brand slogan "The Best A Man Can Get". In an age of #MeToo and more, Grey New York questions many of the existing assumptions about what truly makes for the "Best" from men. Needless to say, Gillette's status remains unchallenged even if casual sexism, bullying, mansplaining and apparently even barbecues are a strict no-no. Director Kim Gehrig does a fine job of corralling the elements: she's become the go-to for these types of campaigns, last seen on that fine "Viva La Vulva" campaign for Essity, featured here late last year.   • "Hooky / Moving". These two strong new spots for Volkswagen USA are either the last from incumbent Deutsch or the first from the newly appointed (and newly created) WPP entity VW Partnership. (We're still waiting for credits to arrive). Whichever the case, it marks a welcome change in direction from the rather earnest and sentimental spots Deutsch has recently been delivering for the carmaker in favour of something a bit edgier and more daring. WPP's Canadian agency John St has been running different variations on the Eat Together concept for the past three years for President's Choice, the own-brand banner of local supermarket giant Loblaw. It's a great message, and at least two of those ads have ended up as minor classics in their own right. For the new edition, the agency secured permission to use the widely celebrated "Dream of Life" speech by the British-American philosopher Alan Watts. Rather like Paul Harvey's 'God Made A Farmer' speech used in Ram Trucks' 2013 Super Bowl campaign, a well-selected piece of "found audio" can elevate the right images into something profound. Though he died in 1973, many of Watts' ideas are as uplifting and inspiring today as they were in the late 1960s. In the past few days, some online critics have decried the "commercialisation" of Watts' philosophy to sell supermarket food, but we might argue that anything that spreads those words, especially 50 years after they were originally spoken, can only be a good thing.   • "Take a New Chance". It's great to see that legendary photographer and stylist Jean-Paul Goude - 80 next year - is still busy in the image business. He's best-known, of course, for his long creative and romantic partnership with Grace Jones in the 1980s and 1990s; but also for his work over many decades with Chanel. In 1992, for example, he created that extraordinary ad for the fashion house with Vanessa Paradis as a tiny human canary in a gilded cage, and has returned repeatedly over the years to unveil new creations. Age seems to be no impediment; Chanel, after all, is far from being no country for old men with 85-year-old Karl Lagerfeld still at its creative helm. It's a ravishing concept, illustrated by a succession of beautifully extravagant images. Our particular favourite is one of the quirkiest: the guy plucking rooftop-grown carrots through the ceiling of his flat. One side-note: we don't imagine indie musician Edward Barton ever imagined that the ethereal poem 'It's Fine Day' recorded a cappella by his girlfriend Jane in 1982 would be used in a German supermarket ad almost 40 years later.   • "The Man Who Always Wakes Up in a Different Bed". That's the entertaining premise to the new campaign for Thomas Cook from Albion London, part of MDC's Forsman & Bodenfors family. It's not worth asking why this Groundhog Day-type of dilemma could possibly exist. Just suspend your disbelief and enjoy. Or at least, enjoy the vignettes on either side of what looks to us like 20 seconds of sheer hell at a multi-storey Thomas Cook mega-hotel jammed to the gills with screaming kids and where the highlight of every day is the daily fight to get the best lounger on the beach.   • "Because Them, Us". Happy New Year! Seat's new campaign from dedicated DDB unit C14torce - pronounced 'catorce' or 14 in Spanish - positions the brand as a car for radical free-thinkers. If you've ever thought about working in an office, buying expensive art, joining an all-male dining club or fox-hunting, then this ain't the car for you. Oddly enough, it's the "bad" vignettes that look more interesting than the "good" ones. Stereotypes abound of course - food trucks, urban art, farmers markets - but it's hard to resist the cheek of it. It kind of makes us want to know what the flipside is. Presumably, an ad for Mercedes-Benz or BMW.   • In what has otherwise been a very quiet week for new ads, Apple brightens up the closing days of 2018 with a riot of colour-coded parkour performers. It's like a hyper-active version of one of those epic Spencer Tunick urban assemblies, but this time the models managed to keep their clothes on. The results are, if we're honest, ever so slightly reminiscent of the Sony ads from the golden years of the mid-Noughties - remember 'Balls' and its successor spots? - but we can forgive such influences given the sheer exuberance and technical skill in this new film. We wonder how much digital post-production enhanced those sequences? Surely, filming so many performers for real would have been all but impossible. They're very Italian, and don't translate at all well internationally. So Y&R Milan has the task of delivering more cosmopolitan concepts for other markets. This lovely film from Antoni Berlin for Mercedes-Benz is a perfect example. It's hardly an ad - the product is on-screen for less than 20 seconds out of the four and a half minute total running time. More like a cinematic short story, the tale of a fractured mother and daughter relationship, and of one woman's personal strength and her will to win.   • Ikea takes a rather more low-key approach to the Christmas holidays in its new campaign from indie agency Rethink. It's a charming little film, offering unexpected restraint in its holiday message. You could buy both the ad's featured items - the coffee table and the star - and still get change from $100. The idea, we guess, is to win over the audience with general good feeling not an explicit sales pitch. An interesting sidenote is the decision to focus on would appear to be an ethnically East Asian family. That's great, and not something you see very often in general market ads from most other Western economies, compared to black or mixed race families. Yet as anyone who's visited, for example, Vancouver or Toronto may have observed, Chinese and other people originating from East Asia make up the largest ethnic sub-group by far in most Canadian cities. It's one of things that adds to the country's attractive cosmopolitan character.   • It's not the best ad of the season, nor even a particularly good example of the long and successful partnership between McDonald's in the UK and its agency Leo Burnett London, but they deserve special notice for trying something different for the holidays. To its credit, McD UK has been marketing its "Reindeer Treats" carrot sticks as a special Christmas treat (for small humans) for a couple of years, and there was a similar though less Christmassy campaign this time last year. But this one goes the whole hog (whole reindeer?) with an all-out Father Christmas theme. Those animated reindeer are great, a guaranteed Yuletide child-pleaser. And you have to admire the bravery of a restaurant known for its meat splashing out in such a big way on veggie snacks.   • Well here we are. That annual Christmas milestone has been reached: the new John Lewis ad is out. At first glance, Adam&Eve DDB has proved the doubters wrong. After last year's surprise disappointment, the 2018 Christmas ad is pretty damn wonderful: a celebration of the joy of giving while also providing some form of meditation on one of this country's most beloved musical icons, now just about to embark on his UK Farewell tour. We said 'at first glance' only because we suspect this ad won't look quite as original once the forthcoming 'Rocket Man' biopic is released next summer. There's a different cast and crew for the ad, so it's all original footage, not a clips compilation; nevertheless, the similarities are striking. But our Elton is clearly in the mood for some nostalgic reflection just now, and Adam&Eve DDB has managed to strike while the iron is hot. That rumoured (but denied) £5m paycheck probably helped too. All those reservations aside, this is a great film; a worthy successor to previous showstoppers from this retailer and its agency. It's ads like this that justify the fevered anticipation for each year's John Lewis Christmas ad. We can only show 60 seconds here.   • We're still six weeks till Christmas and it seems like every company and its dog has already unveiled a special seasonal campaign. It's like a global tinsel-topped Super Bowl out there. There are plenty of losers, but also quite a few winners, in many cases from some unexpected sources. One such is this cute campaign for Paypal Europe from French hotshop Buzzman, who can usually be relied upon to find the gold in any creative brief. Just when you began to think you've seen this ad a hundred times before, it comes up with a heart-warming reverse twist.
