Jacques Laffite kicked off the season in Argentina with a win starting from pole. Local hero Reutemann finished 2nd and Watson 3rd. Laffite didn't stop there, he took his 2nd consecutive grand Chelem by starting on pole, leading every lap and winning the race. Ligier teammate Depaillier finished 2nd and Reutemann 3rd. Villeneuve won his 2nd race in South Africa infront of Ferrari teammate and home favourite Scheckter. Jarier dragged his Tyrrell up to 3rd. Villeneuve took his 2nd consecutive victory by starting from pole and setting the fastest lap with teammate Scheckter in 2nd again. Jones finished 3rd. Laffite retired for the 2nd time in a row which gave Gilles the championship lead. Depaillier took Ligier their 3rd win in Jarama infront of the Lotus cars of Reutemann and Andretti. Scheckter took Ferrari their 3rd win in Zolder followed by Laffite and Pironi who took his first podium. Scheckter took over the championship lead in Monaco after winning for the 2nd time in a row. He was joined by Regazzoni and Reutemann. This would also be the last race of 1976 world champion James Hunt. Jean Pierre Jabouille took a special win at Dijon in a French Renault as a French driver at a french track with a French engine, French tyres and French fuel. This was also the first win for a turbocharged car. Villeneuve finished 2nd after an amazing duel with Arnoux who finished 3rd. Regazzoni took Williams their first win on Silverstone with Arnoux in 2nd and Jarier in 3rd. Jones led home a Williams 1/2 in Hockenheim followed by Laffite in 3rd. Jones won again in Austria with Villeneuve in 2nd and Lafitte in 3rd. Jones took Williams their 4 consecutive win in Zandvoort followed by championship leader Scheckter and Laffite. There was a big celebration in Monza where Scheckter led home a 1/2 to seal the driver and constructors title in the proces. Regazzoni joined the Ferrari boys in 3rd. Jones won the following race in Canada after a hard fought battle with Villeneuve who finished 2nd. Regazzoni finished 3rd. Lauda also announced his retirement during practice. Villeneuve won the final race of the season in a wet Watkins Glen. Arnoux and Pironi joined him on the podium.
