Julio was born in New York and moved to Miami when he was 14. Upon enrolling at Miami Central, he became determined to take advantage of the opportunities the Miami community has to offer. He was fortunate to find mentors in some of Miami’s finest leaders and social innovators. Instead of focusing on what he didn’t have, he was driven to make the most of what he did, and found teachers and programs through his school that could get him where he wanted to go. He traveled to Costa Rica with the Nyah Project for a leadership and social entrepreneurship program. Becoming a Posse and Take Charge Scholar enabled Julio to attend his dream school, Syracuse University, where he has continued to find opportunities to impact the world around him. He serves as a Resident Advisor, executive member of the Forever Orange Student Alumni Council, and member of the Dean’s Team.
Julio studied in Madrid for 6 weeks during his freshman year. This summer, he will intern at Ernst & Young in New York City, before spending the Fall 2019 semester studying abroad in Hong Kong.
Donate to the Battier Take Charge Foundation on #givemiamiday and help us continue these fantastic success stories. There are so many more incredible students who need our help!

Degrees: Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Class of 2021
Elijah grew up in Miami's more impoverished areas and went to Miami Central Senior High School. Through sheer grit, and with the support of a close group of friends and family, he graduated in the top 1% of his class. Elijah conducted research on ovarian cancer and helped have a paper published on it, all while still in high school. His dream of attending the University of Miami, one of five universities in the country to offer an undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Immunology, likely would not have come true without the financial support of the Battier Take Charge Foundation. Since he started at UM in the fall of 2017, Elijah has had research published in two medical journals, and he leads the campus premedical advisory organization for minority students. He even graced the Battioke stage last year to sing a duet with Shane!
As we strive to make a personal investment in all of our Scholars, Elijah’s close proximity to the Take Charge team even enables us to make him a home-cooked meal every once in a while. It’s the perfect opportunity to check in and make sure things are going well on campus.
Supporting Take Charge on #GiveMiamiDay on Thursday, November 15th will help us get more kids onto college campuses to #DoWellDoGood.

Allison has been a Battier Take Charge Foundation Scholar since 2014. A first generation college student, she has never wavered in her belief that education was the route to a better life for her and her family. At FIU, Allison discovered a love for computer science, and started learning how to code on her own. At her very first Hackathon, she was awarded the “Best Use of Amazon Web Services” prize, for creating an Alexa app using interactive coping mechanisms for those going through emotional distress. She has parlayed this love and talent for computer science into a second Bachelor’s degree, which she will finish this summer. Allison also works full time in the University’s Data Services department, and spends her spare time volunteering at Code/Art in Miami, teaching middle and high school-aged girls to code. After seeing her passion and commitment to this goal of a second degree, Take Charge was motivated to fund an additional year’s worth of classes for Allison at FIU.
Even cooler - Allison’s drive and success in college has inspired her mom, Ileana, to go back to school to become an RN. Amazing!
A donation to Take Charge on #GiveMiamiDay, Thursday 11/15, helps more passionate students like Allison achieve the dream of a college education.

Antonio was selected as a Battier Take Charge Foundation Scholar in 2015. From the minute we met him, we knew the only thing more impressive than his potential was his grateful, positive attitude. Antonio was born and raised in Miami, and migrated north to obtain an Ivy League education. Currently in his senior year, Antonio is working on dual degree in business and engineering, and will graduate in May. He has interned at Microsoft in Seattle the last two summers, and will likely work for them after graduation. In his spare time, he is the director of the Penn Aerospace Club and loves practicing photography and yoga.
Help us help more incredible future leaders like Antonio, by donating to Take Charge on #GiveMiamiDay on November 15th!
