On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 civil rights supporters gathered in Washington, D.C. to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. As shown in this Overview, listeners stretched from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial all the way to the Washington Monument, a distance of nearly one mile (1.3 km). Today — the third Monday of January — marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day in America, a day to remember his life and contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. /// Image by Thomas J. “I heard them saying ‘Build that wall! Build that wall!’ You know this is indigenous land. You know we’re not supposed to have walls here. We never did. Before anybody else came here we never had walls. We never had a prison.
We always took care of our elders, we took care of our children. We always provided for them. We taught them right from wrong.
I wish I could see the mass of young men put that energy into making this country really great.”
Nathan Phillips (Omaha and Vietnam Vet)
Use me God. Show me how to take who I am, who I want to be, and what I can do, and use it for a purpose greater than myself #mlkday#ihaveadream
PLEASE EDUCATE YOUR CHILDREN! Indigenous People March or the #MMIW Missing murdered indigenous women march. To recognize the Native American women that go missing every year and no one bothers to find them or care. A peaceful Native American march, they were only singing. Today in 2019... "gone in 2020" was shouted by a large group of Trump supporters who were mostly our youth today, mocking my people. Proudly being a Native American and a Mexican.. a minority.. This will never change. But only getting worse. This is not right at all..I am lost at words. I am not going to say who gets what worse.. things just NEED to change. #nativeamerican#standup#indigenouspeople

Elder #NathanPhillips & attorney @ChaseIronEyes at the Lincoln Memorial—the site of #MLK’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech—moments before Phillips was accosted.
The incident exposes “the work we have to do in terms of our social & racial relations,” says Iron Eyes.

The best thing I can do in this world is serve our people. It is always worth it.
A party that calls itself the “party of Lincoln” but seeks to divide the union he sought to protect, is not in fact, a party of Lincoln. I was struck by how many people in the district alone are either not at work, or are working without pay at the moment. Two multimillionaire men are holding them hostage and using DREAMers as leverage. DREAMers who were not in crisis until one of those men created one. It’s horrible.
