The World at Night (TWAN)
Wish you clear skies this Sunday night to Monday morning. A Lunar Eclipse happens on January 20-21, with about an hour of totality visible on Sunday evening (west coast) and near midnight (east coast) from both South & North America, the entire Atlantic, and in the morning sky of Monday 21st near moonset in Europe (better in western & northern most), a good part of Africa, Russia, and Middle East (in an open western horizon before sunrise). The Hawaiian Islands will also see the eclipsed moon rising at dusk on Sunday.
These two telephoto images are of 2011 and 2016 eclipses. The first time I saw this beauty as a teenager in the 1992 lunar eclipse, it introduced me to astrophotography, the career I followed through the years with love for stars and protection of natural night skies. Photo by @kengeiger | The Sheikh Zayad Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, UAE is truly stunning. It took 11 years to build. It is a little over an hour from Dubai, and well worth the the drive. Tours and entry are free. There is a dress code, per Islamic tradition. Follow @kengeiger for more images of the #middleeast and #africa. @natgeoexpeditions#abudhabi#uae

Photo by @PaulNicklen // The aurora borealis illuminates the dark Yukon sky as this small glowing cabin brings warmth to a chilly Arctic night. This vibrant dance of lights across the sky can seem otherworldly, and some Inuit groups believe that the mysterious lights are the spirits of animals that had been hunted by them. #FollowMe at @PaulNicklen for more photos from the #Arctic. #Yukon#NorthernLights#nature#photography

Photo by @taylorglenn // A wild horse in the vast and surreal landscape of the northern region of Namib Naukluft National Park, Namibia. This zone is particularly striking in that it is so unbelievably devoid of anything. And then we came across a band of horses somehow finding a way to forage grass. It turns out that moisture evaporating off the ocean makes its way into the landscape as fog and provides just enough water for wild grass to grow. It is extremely sparse but somehow these creatures survive. Follow @taylorglenn for more from Namibia and beyond.

Photo by @jonathan_irish // My new year started off in one of my favorite places in the world: Antarctica. It’s always an honor to be in this amazing place, and to spend some time getting familiar with penguins and icebergs. Each time I come here, I try to push myself a bit more to get the more difficult shots. This one has been on my list for a while: penguins jumping out of the water onto icebergs. It’s not an easy shot, cuz the action happens fast and you have to anticipate the moment before it happens. But I was lucky enough to get this Adelie penguin in mid flight. Follow me @jonathan_irish for more images like from Antarctica and around the world.
photo by @andrea_frazzetta // The Northern lights over the island of Austvågøy, in the Lofoten archipelago, Norway. The otherworldly aurora borealis, or northern lights, begin high in the Earth’s atmosphere—at altitudes from 60 to more than 250 miles—when charged particles from the sun become trapped in the Earth's magnetic field. The result is a colorful, dancing light show. The Lofoten Islands are draped across the turbulent waters of the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. This rare wilderness outpost offers an untrammeled landscape of majestic mountains, deep fjords, seabird colonies, and long, wave-swept beaches.
