I'm thrilled to introduce Backyard, an initiative from @airbnbsamara to prototype new ways that homes can be built and shared, guided by an ambition to realize more humanistic, future-oriented, and waste-conscious design. Backyard investigates how buildings could thoughtfully respond to changing owner or occupant needs over time. Samara is looking for exceptional people who seek out new kinds of challenges, are creative, and are deeply curious about the way the world is put together. For more information or to join us, check out the link in my bio.

So special to have these two stop by Airbnb. Brad and Tara welcomed me into their home in Texas while I was halfway through a cross-country road show meeting our community. With no Airbnb listings found within a 300-mile radius, I emailed out to see if anyone had an extra room for the night. Brad and Tara responded and became the very first Airbnb hosts in Lubbock, TX. They’ve been active (and amazing!) Airbnb hosts ever since. Thank you, Brad & Tara, for taking the leap to host me and for the many hundreds of guests ever since.

Thanks @guy.raz & @npr for having me at their inaugural How I Built This Summit. Guy’s instinctive curiosity is a superpower which had me unlocking stories I haven’t shared before. I also had the pleasure of meeting an attendee, 14-year-old @kenanpala22. After hearing my episode on NPR, I was floored to learn that Kenan decided to solve a problem in his own backyard and started a non-profit @kids4community to help encourage kids to volunteer. Solving a problem in the world starts at any age. #hibtsummit (📷@lobstehlarry)

Stayed at the quirkiest, coolest #airbnb in Providence. The 200 year old house is a maze of staircases, creaky floors, and unusual art. The character of this place reminded me why I haven’t stayed in a hotel in years.

It was a pleasure hosting Dr. Jim Yong Kim for a fireside chat at Airbnb HQ. This legend has been changing the world the minute he graduated from medical school and started @PartnersinHealth over 30 years ago. He’s also been at the helm of the World Bank Group with the mission to end extreme poverty by 2030. In that spirit, last year #Airbnb and @WorldBank have partnered on trainings and pilot programs together in places like rural India, Jamaica, Peru and South Africa with the joint goal of using our platform to help stimulate economic opportunity and inclusive tourism. While Dr. Kim imparted his wisdom on our team, I learned we share something in common: we love taking on the impossible.

When your team surprises you with a pair of Off-White Presto’s for you birthday😭. They’re a welcomed addition to the sneaker collection. Thanks @airbnbsamara!

Tuesday, I had the chance to bring Al Gore to Airbnb for a fireside chat. Vice President spoke about the importance of companies taking a long view— "If you're only thinking 5 years out, you probably have a lot of competitors." It was fun, it was inspiring, and an awesome way to celebrate (coincidentally) my birthday. Al Gore is my kind of rockstar. Thank you @algore for your leadership and wisdom on sustainability. And to my teams at Airbnb for surprising me with and cake and wearing all black! 📷 @miknayr

Recently I participated in a campaign by @Adidas called Run For the Oceans, to create awareness about ocean plastics. I laced up and jogged from our Airbnb offices in SoMa to the Bay Bridge and back, each kilometer raising money towards the cause.
Practically every piece of plastic ever made is still on earth. Only 9.5% of plastic is actually recycled in the United States. Where does the rest go? An exorbitant amount ends up in the ocean; so much that by 2050 there will be more particles of plastic in the water than fish.
Adidas is stepping up and made a bold commitment to incorporate recycled plastics in all their products by 2024. See the Ultraboost Parley running shoes for their first example of sneakers made from ocean plastic. Learn more at adidas.com/us/parley #RunForTheOceans#ParleyForTheOceans
